Outdoor Education

If you are looking for a dynamic course that will give you the skills, knowledge and experience to be a skilled outdoor educator then you’ve come to the right place. Here at BCA you will have the opportunity to learn and develop your skills in beautiful and spacious surroundings with onsite facilities including high and low rope courses, indoor and outdoor climbing facilities, a specialist bushcraft area, as well as hundreds of acres of land perfect for honing navigation and orienteering skills ready for expeditions.

The course will help you to gain the skills needed in the Outdoor Education industry as well as offer a range of qualifications that will help you progress through your career, either by gaining employment or moving on to Higher Education. You will be able to specialise in a range of land and water based outdoor activities and participate and lead a variety of adventurous challenges and expeditions, developing skills in kayaking, canoeing, climbing, archery and mountaineering.

    About the Course

    This qualification is ideal for learners who are interested in pursuing a career in the sport or outdoor education industry. This unique programme will give you the opportunity to tailor your course to your area of interest where you will have the choice of one of three pathways: Sports Coaching, Exercise and Fitness or Outdoor Education. You will study core modules as well as modules specific to your pathway and have the opportunity to gain a specific additional qualification which will enable you to access employment in this area.

    Progression

     

    Successful completion of this course will lead to opportunities to progress onto a Level 3 qualification in Sport or Outdoor Education, onto an apprenticeship or into employment in the sports industry.

    GCSE/Functional Skills

    All full-time students, aged between 16-18, will study GCSE or Functional Skills in Maths and English, if they don’t already hold a grade 4 or above GCSE in the subject. This is an integral part of their vocational study programme at BCA. Students over 19 are also encouraged to refresh and accredit their skills alongside vocational study.

    Entry Requirements

    4 GCSEs at grade 3 or above including English, Maths and preferably PE and/or Science.

    OR

    Level 1 Diploma in Sport and GCSE English and Maths at grade 3 or above.

    All applicants must successfully complete an academic interview.

    Course Duration

    One Year

  • Level 3 EXTENDED DIPLOMA IN SPORT: OUTDOOR EDUCATION

    About the Course

    This course will develop the professional competencies and knowledge needed to be a skilled outdoor educator and activity leader, and provide a good understanding of the practical and contemporary issues within this exciting sector. You will be given the opportunity to participate in and lead a range of practical outdoor and adventure activities and gain valuable expedition experience  on UK and international trips. You will study and develop skills in a variety of outdoor sports, learn about environmental education as well as establish a strong foundation of interpersonal skills required for this industry including problem solving, decision making, confidence and communication.

    Across the two years you will cover key theoretical and practical units including:

    • Principles & Practices in Outdoor Education
    • Fitness Training & Programming
    • Coaching
    • Skills for Land & Water-based Outdoor & Adventurous Activities
    • Leading Land & Water-based Outdoor & Adventurous Activities
    • Outdoor & Adventurous Expeditions

    Along with providing you with the necessary knowledge and skills, you will also have the opportunity to gain professional qualifications alongside your level 3 programme which will enable you to gain employment and continue progressing towards your career in the exciting and expanding outdoor industry.

    Progression

    Learners will begin on a one year 90 credit diploma, equivalent to 1.5 A-Levels. Successful completion of year one will lead to progression onto the second year where they will study an additional 90 credits to achieve a fully Extended Diploma, equivalent to 3 A-Levels.

    Completion of the Extended Diploma will lead to entry to a range of Higher Education programme, apprenticeships or direct employment with an outdoor activity employer.

    5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English and Maths, and preferably either Science or PE

    OR

    Level 2 Diploma in Sport at Merit/Distinction grade (or equivalent) and GCSE English and Maths at grade 4 or above.
