The Construction industry provides a range of interesting and varied career opportunities. Within the Thames Valley, there are a wide variety of major commercial and domestic construction projects.

Our new Skills Centre has comprehensively equipped construction workshops to support the teaching of the practical elements of the programmes, including specialist areas for brick and block work. Click here to view the facilities.

Our hands-on courses will enable you to develop practical skills across a range of trades in the landscape and building industries and to understand the need for safe working conditions.

All courses are delivered through a mix of teaching methods including demonstrations, practicals and assignments. Particular emphasis is placed on practical work and you will also have the chance to obtain additional industry based qualifications.

Level 1 Diploma in Bricklaying (1 year)

This qualification aims to give you the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge in brickwork and is designed for those students who have a general interest in working within the Construction industry.

Programme Content
This course includes the following units -

Carry out safe working practices in construction
Information, quantities and communicating with others
Building methods and construction technology
Carry out basic blocklaying skills
Carry out basic bricklaying skills
Carry out basic cavity walling
Contribute to setting out and building basic masonry structures up to damp course level

Entry Requirements
Four GCSE’s at Grade E or above, or an Entry Certificate equivalent, plus a satisfactory school reference and successful completion of an Initial Assessment.

Progression
Successful students will be able to progress onto the Level 2 programme (subject to achieving a Merit or Distinction and satisfactory progress reports). This programme also provides underpinning knowledge for National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ’s) and therefore supports entry to employment.

Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying (1 year)

This course is ideal preparation for the world of work or progression onto higher-level qualifications.

Programme Content
This course includes the following units -

Know how to carry out safe working practices in construction
Carry out safe working practices in construction
Information, quantities and communicating with others
Knowledge of building methods and construction technology
Building methods and construction technology
Interpret working drawings to set out masonry structures
Thin joint masonry and masonry cladding
Know how to build solid walling, isolated and attached piers
Know how to build cavity walling forming masonry structures

Entry Requirements
Four GSCE’s at Grade D or above or a Level 1 at merit level or above, plus a satisfactory school reference and successful completion of an Initial Assessment.

Progression
Successful students will be able to progress onto a Level 3 programme, subject to achieving a Merit or Distinction). This programme also provides underpinning knowledge for National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ’s) and therefore supports entry to employment.
