The Motor Vehicle Industry is one of the most important in the UK and provides thousands of jobs in design, manufacture, maintenance and a wide range of other specialised areas.

Our Motor Vehicle Department is well equipped to meet the demands of all our programmes which have been designed to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding required for the industry. The qualifications we deliver are recognized globally and experience is gained on a range of vehicles, equipment and components.

ABC Level 1 Certificate in Motor Vehicle Studies

City & Guilds Level 2 in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair

 

ABC Level 1 Certificate in Motor Vehicle Studies (1 year)

This programme provides a first step into Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair.

Programme content
This programme consists of one core unit and a choice of five specialist units:

Core unit

  • Health and safety for motor vehicle studies

Specialist units

  • Introduction to engineering equipment and materials
  • Introduction to compression ignition power units
  • Introduction to spark ignition power units
  • Introduction to engine liquid cooling and lubrication systems
  • Introduction to vehicle transmission systems
  • Introduction to battery and lighting systems
  • Introduction to steering and suspension systems
  • Introduction to vehicle braking systems
  • Introduction to vehicle wheels and tyres
  • Introduction to vehicle exhaust systems

Entry requirements
4 GCSEs at Grade E or above, or an Entry Certificate.

Plus a satisfactory school reference and successful completion of an Inital Assessment.

Assessment method
This course is continually assessed through assignments and project work.

Equipment needed
All students will require safety boots and overalls.

Progression
On successful completion of this programme, students can progress to the City & Guilds Level 2 VRQ Vehicle Maintenance and Repair programme.

Employment opportunities
This course could lead into an Apprenticeship or other work-based learning through a garage.

City & Guilds Level 2 in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (1 year)

This one-year programme prepares learners to enter employment in the Motor Vehicle maintenance and repair industry. Successful completion of the course will result in the award of the Level 2 City & Guilds Vocationally Related Qualification Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair.

Programme content
The programme consists of three core units and a choice of five specialist units:

Core units

  • Health, safety and good housekeeping in the automotive environment
  • Support skills for job roles in the automotive environment
  • Materials, fabrication, tools and measuring devices used in the automotive environment

Specialist units

  • Routine maintenance
  • Removing and replacing light vehicle engine units and components
  • Removing and replacing motor vehicle electrical units and components
  • Removing and replacing light vehicle chassis units and components
  • Removing and replacing light vehicle driveline units and components
  • Inspecting light vehicles using prescribed methods

Entry requirements
A standard of literacy and numeracy, supported by 4 GCSEs at Grade D or above, or successful completion of a Level 1 Motor Vehicle qualification.

Plus a satisfactory school reference and successful completion of an Inital Assessment.

Exams

Equipment needed
All students will require safety boots and overalls

Progression
Successful completion of this programme can provide the basis for progression to the Level 3 City & Guilds VRQ Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair.

Employment opportunities
This course could lead to an Apprenticeship or other work-based learning through a garage.

City & Guilds VRQ Level 3 in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (2 years)

This one-year programme gives learners advanced knowledge and skills in the motor vehicle maintenance and repair industry.

Programme content
The programme consists of three core units and a choice of four specialist units:

Core units

  • Health, safety and good housekeeping in the automotive environment
  • Support skills for job roles in the automotive environment
  • Materials, fabrication, tools and measuring devices used in the automotive environment

Specialist units

  • Diagnosing and rectifying light vehicle engine faults
  • Diagnosing and rectifying light vehicle chassis faults
  • Diagnosing and rectifying light vehicle transmission and driveline faults
  • Diagnosing and rectifying motor vehicle electrical unit and component faults
  • Identify and agree motor vehicle customer service needs
  • Inspecting light vehicles using prescribed methods

Entry requirements
To join this programme, you will need a standard of literacy and numeracy, supported by 4 GCSEs at Grades A–C or to have completed the Level 2 City and Guilds qualification.

Plus a satisfactory school reference and successful completion of an Inital Assessment.

Exams

Equipment needed
All students will require safety boots and overalls

Progression
This qualification prepares you for employment in the Motor Vehicle industry. The skills acquired during your studies should enable you to progress to a technical or professional position.

Employment opportunities
This course could lead to work as a mechanic.
