Student Loans

There are changes currently being consulted on relating to how students can access loans from the Student Loan Company. In 2011/12 only students studying full-time were eligible for tuition fee loans, however in 2012 it may be possible for part-time students to be eligible for the first time. For further information about student loans and how to apply, follow this link to the Student Finance England website: www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance

When considering the true cost of taking out a student loan you need to fully investigate the terms and conditions offered. The interest repayable on student loan is linked to the rate of inflation which is currently much higher than interest rates and interest accrues all the time the loan is outstanding. At present you cannot start paying off your loan until the April after you graduate. It may take you many more years to pay back your student loan than you expect.

Grants

New full-time students from lower income households are eligible for a non-repayable maintenance grant (either the Higher Education Grant or Special Support Grant) of up to £2,906 a year. How much you will get will depend on your income and that of your household. If that income is around £25,000 or less you are likely to be eligible for a full grant worth £2,906. Partial grants are likely to be available for those with a household income of between around £25,000 – £42,600.
