Horticulture

We use practical hands-on teaching along with underpinning knowledge from trained professionals both within the College and from industry.

Whilst on the programme you will get the opportunity to work in a variety of situations and locations. We make full use of the 400 acre historic estate and the grade 2 listed parks and gardens to practise in and develop your skills in line with industry requirements.

Our students progress into exciting careers across the country including working in botanical and historic gardens, conservation trusts, garden centres, landscape teams, green roof companies, National Trust properties or to set up and run their own businesses.

  • Level 1 Diploma in Land-based Studies - Horticulture

    About the Course

    This course provides an introduction to the diverse Horticulture related industries and a sound knowledge and skills base which will allow progression to further learning or qualifications.

    Your course is practical in nature and you will be out in the College’s 400 acre estate and grade 2 listed parks, learning all of the basic practical skills needed to further your opportunities to go into work or progress on to a higher level course.

    Progression

    Progression on to the Level 2 Diploma, depending on progress at Level 1 and tutor references.

    GCSE/Functional Skills

    All full-time students, aged between 16-18, will study GCSE or Functional Skills in Maths and English, if they don’t already hold an A*- C level GCSE in the subject. This is an integral part of their vocational study programme at BCA. Students over 19 are also encouraged to refresh and accredit their skills alongside vocational study.

  • Level 2 Technical Qualification in Horticulture

    About the Course

    This Level 2 qualification will develop your knowledge and extend your practical skills, giving you access to a wide range of career options.

    Your course covers all the basics that industry requires, from understanding how to establish and maintain planted areas, make use of the machinery common to the sector, identify the plants that you might come across and the opportunity to do all the seasonal practical tasks required of you in a varied and exciting workplace.

    Progression

    Progress to the Level 2 Apprenticeship, depending on grades achieved and GCSE results. You will also be well placed to find a job in the industry which requires ‘hands-on’ practical skills.

    GCSE/Functional Skills
