ALFIE Part time courses for adults with learning difficulties and disabilities

If you have a learning difficulty or disability you may like to enrol on one or two of our Entry Level courses. You may come on your own or with a carer. The courses are FREE but we ask for a contribution towards ingredients for cooking and materials for crafts so that you can take your creations home.   • World Culture

    About the course

    The aim of this course is to learn more about different countries around the world and their physical landscape, weather, culture, music, language and food.

    You will experience a variety of media and discuss your thoughts with the class.

    FREE – but we ask for a contribution of £1 per week for materials

  • Craft and Design

    About the course

    The aim of this course is to develop personal, social and artistic skills. You will be working on speaking and listening, remembering facts, learning how to be creative with paint and pencils, cutting, sticking and working with a variety of different mediums.

    Whatever you create, you will be able to take it away with you at the end of each project.

    FREE – but we ask for a weekly contribution of £2 per week for materials.

  • Animal Experience

    About the course

    You will learn about the different animals we have at BCA, from Meerkats and Lemurs to Rabbits and Guinea Pigs, not forgetting our sheep, goats and alpacas. You will have the chance to feed and handle the animals and learn how to look after them.

  • Going into the Community

    About the course

    The aim of this course is to learn more about local communities and how to access the town confidently and safely. You will learn about the different amenities the town has, how to find information and who to ask if you have a problem.

    FREE but you will need to bring money to purchase refreshments and sometimes to pay for activities such as bowling.

  • Money Matters

    About the course

    The aim of this course is to learn more about money and how to use it. You will practice counting money, giving change and learn a bit more about banking and bank accounts including how to look after your money.

  • Bake Off

    About the course

    You will learn how to bake a variety of different cakes, biscuits, breads and desserts from around the world and work out how much they cost. You will gain knowledge of different baking methods and learn how to be safe in the kitchen environment.

  • Cook and Eat Together

    About the course

    You will learn how to cook a variety of different foods from around the world and work out how much they cost. You will learn to understand how to eat a healthy diet and how to be safe in the kitchen. You will make new friends, try lots of new foods with your group and comment on whether you like them or not.

  • Social Gaming

    About the course

    The aim of this course is to learn the different types of social gaming and to help you improve your confidence and social skills. You will be introduced to wargaming, trading cards, role-play games, augmented reality mobile games and video games.

    We will look at the history of some of these games and the types of jobs that are available in the industry.

    The aim of this course is to get better at reading and writing in real-life situations whilst improving personal, social and employability skills.
