ALFIE Part time courses for adults with learning difficulties and disabilities

If you have a learning difficulty or disability you may like to enrol on one or two of our Entry Level courses. You may come on your own or with a carer. The courses are FREE but we ask for a contribution towards ingredients for cooking and materials for crafts so that you can take your creations home.   • World Culture

    About the course

    The aim of this course is to learn more about the physical landscape, weather, culture, music, language, animals and food from different countries around the world; and to improve personal, social and employability skills.

    You will learn this through experiencing a variety of media and discussing with the class what you thought. 

    Each week you will learn about a different country, aiming to complete a fact sheet so you can learn 10 new facts about that country. To do this you might watch video clips showing the capital city, landscape, food and animals from that country, try on traditional clothing, try different foods or learn about the extreme weather or natural disasters that occur there. Some weeks you will visit the BCA zoo to learn about the animals from the country you are studying.

    To attend this course, you should be happy to write short sentences that can be copied from the board to complete fact sheets about different countries.

  • Bake Off

    About the course

    The aim of this course is to learn more about baking cakes, desserts and savoury foods that don’t cost too much. You will improve personal, social and employability skills and learn to work safely in a kitchen.

    You will learn how to bake a variety of different cakes, biscuits, breads and desserts from around the world and work out how much they cost, learning different baking methods.

    There is some theory work on the course. Each week you will learn about an aspect of food safety or health. Topics include Kitchen Safety, Food Safety and Storage, Eating Healthily, Food Groups, Being Price aware when shopping and Food Allergies. You might carry out group exercises, complete worksheets, try different foods or make posters to achieve this.

    FREE – but we ask for a weekly contribution of £3 per week for the cost of ingredients, £96 per year payable at the beginning of the year

  • Animal Experience

    About the course

    You will learn about the different animals we have at BCA, from Meerkats and Lemurs to Rabbits and Guinea Pigs, not forgetting our sheep, goats and alpacas. You will have the chance to feed and handle the animals and learn how to look after them.

  • Cook and Eat Together

    About the course

    The aim of this course is to learn more about cooking healthy meals that don’t cost too much and to try some new foods. You will improve personal, social and employability skills.

    You will learn how to cook a variety of different foods from around the world and work out how much they cost. Each week you will cook two courses, either a starter and a main course or a main course and a dessert. You will then sit and eat these together with your group. Over the duration of the course you will try lots of new foods and comment on whether you like them or not.

    There is some theory work on the course. Each week you will learn about an aspect of food safety or health. Topics include Kitchen Safety, Food Safety and Storage, Eating Healthily, Food Groups, Being Price aware when shopping and Food Allergies. You might carry out group exercises, complete worksheets, try different foods or make posters to achieve this.

    Most of all we love to have fun whilst we are cooking and sharing food together!

    About the course

    The aim of this course is to learn more about money and how to use it. You will practice counting money and giving change and learn a bit more about banking and bank accounts including how to look after your money.

  • Online Safety and Digital Media

    About the course

    Do you want to use the Internet and feel safe online? Do you need guidance in finding the right places you want to visit online and be able to access social media, blogs and chat rooms? Do you want to be able to take photos and videos and edit them to how you want? If so, then this course could be for you. 

    Working step by step you will be shown how to access online material safely, how to keep your personal information safe, you will be able to find and participate in chat rooms, use Facebook and Instagram. Moving on from that we will take photos and videos and learn different ways of editing them and sharing them with others. The main aim of this course is to equip you with the skills you will need to safely and confidently use the Internet in your free time. The Internet offers a lot of information and together we will find the best bits!

  • International Cooking with Confidence

    About the course

    The aim of this course is to develop your cooking skills and to learn more about cooking healthy meals that don’t cost too much. You will improve personal, social and employability skills. You should already have a good skill level for cooking and be able to follow a recipe from start to finish.

    Each week you will learn how to cook a different dish from around the world and work out how much it costs. This might be a main course, a dessert or a baked item such as a cake or bread. Over the duration of the course you will try lots of new foods and comment on whether you like them or not. You will also learn about the history of the food you have cooked and about the other types of food that they eat in that country.

    There is some theory work on the course. Each week you will learn about an aspect of food safety or health. Topics include Kitchen Safety, Food Safety and Storage, Eating Healthily, Food Groups, Being Price aware when shopping and Food Allergies.   • Developing Independence in the Community

    About the course

    Getting out into the local area is not only important but also fun! This course is all about accessing the community, being in touch with local people, meeting people and developing friendships. 

    You will learn how to access the local amenities safely and confidently. You will experience lots of different activities and will also have the opportunity to visit a range of cafes/or restaurants. Before you set out as a group, you will need to find out what is available and how to plan a visit.

    Free, but you will need to bring money to purchase refreshments and sometimes to pay for activities such as bowling

  • Reading and Writing

    About the course

    The reading and writing course is for all abilities.  The course aims to encourage independence and employability. You will also be working on speaking and listening and following instructions.

    Reading is taught using real-life examples such as magazines, recipes and TV guides.

    Writing skills are taught in a practical way such as filling in simple forms and writing greetings cards.

    Confidence is built working together to discuss ideas and discover interests and opinions.

  • Floristry

    About the course

    The course will give you an opportunity to make a variety of seasonal floral designs using flowers, papercraft and other materials. This year the students have made everything from topiary trees using roses to paper flower pomanders. Flowers are not just for arranging. In some lessons we will look at what other products are made with them and often there is tasting along the way!

  • Photography

    About the course

    Our photography classes are fun and inspiring.  Students are encouraged to share their thoughts, viewpoints, frustrations and joys through the means of photography.  The wonderful setting of BCA allows for each individual to explore different surroundings that excite them.  

    The  visual diary created can  serve as a way to help students  chart, document and reflect on their  journey throughout the year.  

    Different techniques and approaches are explored throughout the year including self portraits, perspective photography and  nature photography. Editing software allows students to further edit their work to create stunning photographs. 

    Sessions are relaxed and adapted to suit each individual needs and interests.

    FREE – but we ask for £2 per week for material, £64 per year payable at the beginning of the year.

    About the course

    This course is for people who would like to have fun, make friends and learn new skills in drama, music, storytelling in a supported and friendly environment. Come and express yourself whilst building on your confidence. 

    Sessions are planned with the individual needs of young people in mind and delivered in a way which supports each group member’s development and participation and plays to their strengths. At the end of the year we hope to have the opportunity to share what they have learnt and created with their families, friends and careers.

  • Craft Fun

    About the course

    The aim of this course is to develop personal, social and artistic skills. You will be working on speaking and listening, remembering facts, learning how to be creative with paint and pencils, cutting, sticking and working with a variety of different mediums including clay.

    Whatever you create, you will be able to take it away with you at the end of each project.

  • Advanced Art

    About the course

    The art classes are an enjoyable experience, individuals are given the opportunity to express inner thoughts and help to better understand and make sense of emotions. 

    The benefits of art make the session at BCA a valuable process for the adults attending.   A break from the pressures to succeed and  the hectic world that exists around us  Art classes can give you the opportunity to pause and work at achieving self-expression and expression of feelings.

    Art classes  can give you a voice which  can be used to communicate thoughts and feelings. 

    Sessions explore Art with paint, pencils, clay and pastels to help you to find a way to begin.
