About The Course
This course provides an introduction to the motor vehicle industry and prepares learners to progress on to a Level 2 qualification with ABC or City and Guilds, or on to an apprenticeship.
Entry Requirements
ABC Entry Requirements: Students must demonstrate a clear interest in vehicles and mechanical things. They will also be required to complete an interview which includes a mechanical aptitude assessment or already hold an Entry Level 3 Diploma in Motor Vehicle Maintenance at a Pass grade or above. Applicants must also hold GCSE English and maths qualifications at grade 1 or above.
City & Guilds Entry Requirements: Students must demonstrate a clear interest in vehicles and mechanical things. They will also be required to complete an interview which includes a mechanical aptitude assessment. Applicants should have achieved GCSE English and maths qualifications at grade 2 or above.

City & Guilds Qualification Progression: Progression onto the Level 2 City & Guilds Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance or an apprenticeship
By the end of either course, you should be able to inspect and carry out standard maintenance on modern petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric-powered cars and light vans working with some supervision.
Example units include:
- Health and safety for motor vehicle studies
- Introduction to battery and lighting systems
- Introduction to engine liquid cooling and engine lubrication systems
- Introduction to engineering equipment and materials
- Introduction to spark ignition power units
- Introduction to steering and suspension
- Introduction to vehicle braking systems
- Introduction to vehicle exhaust systems
- Introduction to vehicle ignition systems
You will complete a Level 1 hybrid and electric vehicle safety training programme within your course.
Alongside the above study, the programme will include GCSE maths and English Language. Those who come to us with passes (Grade 4 and above) in English and/or maths will follow a Professional Development programme alongside their main study programme.
You will require PPE for practical lessons, they are:
- Steel toe capped safety boots
- Overalls
- Safety glasses
You will also require pen, paper and file for your practical and theory lessons.
Lockers for storing personal belongings are available. There is a fee and a non-refundable deposit for lockers.
ABC Qualification: Skills and Education Group ABC Level 1 Diploma in Motor Vehicle Studies
City & Guilds Qualification: City & Guilds Level 1 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance.
With both qualifications, students will gain the skills and knowledge for a support role in a motor vehicle workshop.

Practical skills assessments
Written knowledge assessments
The ABC Level 1 Diploma uses a portfolio-based assessment. This includes worksheets and practical tasks which must be completed and logged in the portfolio.
Level 1 City & Guilds Assessment includes:
Two online multiple-choice exams. These are awarded at pass, merit or distinction level
Practical skills assessments
Written knowledge assessments
You will build a portfolio of evidence for the college-based assessments
One week block placement with a suitable employer towards the end of the academic year.
