About The Course
This course provides an introduction to the motor vehicle industry and prepares learners to progress on to a Level 2 qualification with ABC, City and Guilds or a BCA work-based technical qualification.
Entry Requirements
Students must demonstrate a clear interest in vehicles and mechanical things. They will also be required to complete an interview which includes a mechanical aptitude assessment or already hold an Entry Level 3 Diploma in Motor Vehicle Maintenance at a Pass grade or above. Applicants must also hold GCSE English and maths qualifications at grade 2 or above.

Progression onto the Level 2 ABC Diploma in Motor Vehicle Studies or Level 2 City & Guilds Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance or a Level 2 Motor Vehicle Work-Based Technical Qualification.
By the end of the course, you should be able to inspect and carry out standard maintenance on modern petrol, diesel-powered cars and light vans working with some supervision.
The units include:
- Health and safety for motor vehicle studies
- Introduction to battery and lighting systems
- Introduction to engine liquid cooling and engine lubrication systems
- Introduction to engineering equipment and materials
- Introduction to spark ignition power units
- Introduction to steering and suspension
- Introduction to vehicle braking systems
- Introduction to vehicle exhaust systems
- Introduction to vehicle ignition systems
Alongside the above study, the programme will include GCSE maths and English Language and is timetabled for three days a week. Those who come to us with passes (Grade 4 and above) in English and/or maths will follow a Professional Development programme alongside their main study programme.
You will require PPE for practical lessons, they are:
- Steel toe capped safety boots
- Overalls
- Safety glasses
Depending on the Level 1 route, the qualification will be either an ABC Level 1 Diploma in Motor Vehicle Studies or City & Guilds Level 1 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance.
You will gain the skills and knowledge for a support role in a motor vehicle workshop.
Level 1 C&G Assessment includes:
Two online multiple-choice exams. The pass mark for these is 60%

The ABC Level 1 Diploma uses a portfolio-based assessment. This includes worksheets and practical tasks which must be completed and logged in the portfolio.
One week block placement with a suitable employer towards the end of the academic year.
