Course Overview

Our Level 2 Technical Certificate in Land-Based Engineering is for anyone who is looking to start a career within the land-based engineering sector. Modern land-based engineering is not just about building larger and more powerful tractors and farm machinery. The skills required include robotics, computer-based imaging, GPS technology, science-based solutions, climate forecasting, technological solutions, environmental controls and much more.

Although farming and food production is a major focus, the land-based engineering industry extends into everything from the countryside and forestry to sports grounds and open spaces.

This qualification could start you off on the first steps on your journey to an exciting and rewarding career. Additional skills you will develop in this course are teamwork, working outdoors, problem-solving and analytical and IT skills. You will also be able to develop employability skills alongside gaining confidence in becoming an independent learner.

This course is delivered predominantly through theory lessons, some practical work, group seminars and internal and external professional development (industry/work placement). You will also have individual tutorials with your Course Manager regularly to monitor and track your progress.

Course information

This programme is made up of a mixture of modules including but not limited to:

Health and safety for the land-based industries
Land-based engineering workshop practices
Transmission and driveline operation principles
Engine operation principles
Fabrication
cutting and joining
Land-based vehicle electrics
Hydraulic systems
Land-based vehicle and machinery operation
Working in the land-based engineering industry

1 year

This course is delivered predominantly through theory lessons, some practical work, group seminars and internal and external Industry placement.

Assessment takes place through the completion of examinations, synoptic assessment, homework and successful completion of industry placement.

Level 2 Technical Certificate in Land-Based Engineering (City & Guilds)

As part of the qualification, you will need to complete at least 150 hours of work experience.

This will be accompanied by some additional day release industry placements, as we run the course in conjunction with employers.

Employers contribute to the assessment of your work when they take the role of ‘expert witness’ and work with us on planned projects and exercises. (subject to confirmation)

Progression can be on to further study (subject to meeting specified entry requirements) into higher education studying subjects such as Agriculture, Applied Farm Management & Rural Land Management.

We have had learners attend Harper Adams University, Royal Agricultural University and Aberystwyth University, an Apprenticeship programme or a career within the Agriculture industry.

Level 2

Working in the land-based sector can be hard work and requires dedication, but is highly rewarding in return. Land-based engineering incorporates rural and countryside businesses which include agriculture, horticulture, forestry, recreation, sports and leisure industries.

You will need to be comfortable with working in all weathers, be physically fit and be able to carry out routine maintenance skills.

We have a strict dress code for working within our workshops and, as such, you need to be prepared to follow instructions from all staff to maintain your own and others’ health, safety and welfare.
