About The Course
The level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science is an excellent starting point for those wishing to pursue a career in a range of science based subjects inclusive of veterinary nursing, forensic science and pharmaceuticals. The majority of our students take a two year programme completing an Extended Diploma in Applied Science which is equivalent to three A-levels.
Students are able to develop practical laboratory skills in our well equipped labs and gain underpinning knowledge of science related topics. The courses also provide an opportunity for students to develop employability skills alongside gaining confidence in becoming independent learners.
This course is delivered predominantly through theory lessons, practical laboratory work, group seminars and external professional development (industry/work placement). You will also have individual tutorials with your Course Manager on a regular basis in order to monitor and track your progress.
Guest speakers, trips and visits are used to enhance the learning environment where possible.
Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including science, maths and English or a Level 2 Science qualification at Merit/Distinction grade with a grade 4 or above in maths and English.
Please note that we recommend students to be working at grade 5 level in their GCSEs if they are interested in progressing onto university in the future. We also consider students that have achieved a Level 2 Science qualification with a Merit/Distinction (and who have achieved maths and English at grade 4 or above).
At interview we will require evidence of your interest in the sciences and in developing a career working in this field. We also recommend that you attend a taster day to get a further insight into what the course will involve.
This course can lead to employment within:
- Veterinary nursing
- Scientific research
- Forensic Science
- Pharmaceutical/medical organisations
Students can also progress (subject to meeting specified entry requirements) into higher education studying subjects such as veterinary nursing, chemistry, forensic science and biology.
This programme is made up of a mixture of modules including:
- Principles & Applications of Science
- Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
- Science Investigation Skills
- Laboratory Techniques and their Application

Students must be self-motivated, well organised and hard working in order to meet the deadlines set for achievement on the course. We expect students to be curious, creative and to enjoy learning. If you have a learning difficulty or disability or additional educational need, please let us know when you apply so that we can fully assess for any support you may require.
You may be required to make set contributions towards educational trips and/or travel expenses to local events.
You will achieve the Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Applied Science (1 Year) leading on to the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science. The 1st year qualification can be studied as a standalone qualification (however, note that completion of a 1 year programme will have limitations in relation to progression, particularly onto university).
Assessment takes place through the completion of examinations, synoptic assessment, homework and successful completion of industry placement.
You will complete a one day per week external industry placement. In addition you will complete two weeks as a block placement.
