BCA offers a range of courses aimed at those working in the Landbased sector of industry. Our courses are designed to give employers and employees the opportunity to expand their skills and gain qualifications that will enable them to meet statutory standards and develop skills. To support this training and any existing expertise in the workplace, BCA offer a range of assessments in NPTC City and Guilds certificates of competence.

    About the course

    This is a three day course consisting of two days’ of training followed by an assessment day. The course covers the use of a knapsack sprayer looking at the legislation, interpreting product information, personal safety, storage and disposal of pesticides, environmental protecting and record keeping. Day one of the course focuses on the PA1 foundation unit which covers the legislation through the approved code of practice and candidate undertake the PA1 online assessment at the end of the training day. Day two of the course focuses on the PA6 unit which covers the practical aspects and is assessed the following week with an independent assessor.

  • Level 2 Award in Tree Climbing and Rescue (QCF)

    About the course

    This course is offered as demand requires, the minimum number of candidates needed to run is 4.

    This is a 6 day course consisting of 5 days training followed by one days assessment.

    This course covers accessing trees through climbing using ropes and harness to carry out rescues in a variety of contexts.  The aerial rescues include recovery of both conscious and unconscious casualties whilst maintaining high standards of health and safety and conforming to current legislation and codes of practice.

    Candidates need to have a good level of fitness as this is a very physically demanding course.

    Items students will need to bring

    The climbing equipment is provided by the College however if a candidate wishes to use their own equipment they will need to bring evidence that it has been LOLER checked within the last 6 months.

    The minimum requirement needed is harness, a  35mtr x 13ml rope with spliced eye, lanyard or side strop 5mtrs x 13ml, six three way locking karabiners, cambium saver, four prusik loops, climbing irons

    Candidates will need to supply their own PPE – appropriate footwear, climbing helmet with chin strap, personal first aid kit and gloves are advised.

    About the course

    This is a two day programme consisting of one day’s training followed by an assessment day. The course covers the safe use of handheld hedge trimmers looking at pre-start safety and maintenance checks and operations as appropriate to the machine.

  • Level 2 Award in The Transport of Animals by Road (Short Journeys)

    About the course

    This certificate is necessary for anyone involved in the transportation of animals by road on short journeys (over 65km and up to 8 hours duration) this qualification will ensure the meet the requirement for a Certificate of Competence outlined in the Council Regulation (EC) No1/2005 on the Protection of Animals During Transport and the Welfare of Animals (Transport) Order 2006.

    The qualification is species specific and candidates will need to register against one of the following categories:

    cattle – sheep – cattle and sheep – goats – pigs – poultry –  horses – game birds

    It covers the legal requirements, journey planning, vehicle suitability, fitness to travel, causes and signs of stress in animals, space allowances, stocking densities, handling and animal welfare in transit and post journey requirements.

    This qualification consists of one compulsory knowledge based unit and is assessed by a computer based multiple choice test.

    Please note that this is a test only at BCA, we do not offer any tuition towards this qualification. The assessment schedules are located on the NPTC website www.nptc.org.uk
