Public Services

Our Public Services programmes are carefully designed for people who are looking to progress into a career in the uniformed services including the fire service, police force, paramedics and various branches of the armed forces.

 

Whilst studying one of our Public Services programmes you will have the opportunity to develop the necessary skills, qualities, and knowledge for recruitment directly into the uniformed services, or for progression to higher levels of study. You will be taught by experienced staff who have a range of backgrounds in the uniformed services as well as extensive expert guest speakers. You will also have the opportunity to participate in national and international trips and expeditions, along with boot camps, night exercises and simulated emergencies that will provide you with the industry-relevant skills to further help your progression in your chosen career.

In addition to studying Public Services, we also offer sports academy programmes in Football, Rugby and Netball which enables individuals to develop their sporting talent with expert coaching and represent the college in various regional and national competitions.   • LEVEL 1 DIPLOMA IN PUBLIC SERVICES

    About the course

    This course is an introductory programme to the Uniformed Public Services where you will develop a broad foundation of practical skills, knowledge and interpersonal skills that are required to pursue a career in this industry. You will be encouraged to gain an understanding of a range of different uniformed public services and develop keys skills such as teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills.

    Your programme will involve a mixture of practical and theory modules and will be assessed via a range of methods including projects, practical demonstrations, and assignments based on realistic workplace situations, activities, and demands.

    Progression:

    Progression routes include the Level 2 Certificate/Diploma in Public Services or a Level 2 apprenticeship.

    GCSE/Functional Skills:

    All full-time students, aged between 16-18, will study GCSE or Functional Skills in Maths and English, if they don’t already hold a grade 4 or above GCSE in the subject. This is an integral part of their vocational study programme at BCA. Students over 19 are also encouraged to refresh and accredit their skills alongside vocational study

    There are no formal entry requirements but students must demonstrate enthusiasm for the public services and the development of their own leadership, teamwork, fitness levels and communication skills.

  • LEVEL 2 DIPLOMA IN PUBLIC SERVICES

    About the course

    The Level 2 Certificate/Diploma in Public Services will provide you with specialist, industry-relevant knowledge, understanding and skills that are necessary for pursuing a career in a range of uniformed services. Over the course of the programme you will study a range of specialist units and participate in a number of trips, visits, events, and activities that will set you on the path of your chosen career. With expert tutors, we will provide an environment where a potential future public services employee can mature by develop the required confidence, team-working and physical fitness and skills that are appropriate for direct progression to employment or to continue their studies.


    Progression:

    Successful completion of this course will lead to opportunities to progress onto a Level 3 qualification in Public Services, onto an apprenticeship or into direct employment.

  • LEVEL 3 EXTENDED DIPLOMA IN UNIFORMED PUBLIC SERVICES

    About the course

    Our Level 3 programme in Public Services is designed to prepare you for the nature and pressure of public services work. Designed to give you a insight into the realities of working in a uniformed public service, the mixture of theoretical and practical subjects, based on real-life workplace situations, activities and demands, will develop the essential skills and knowledge you will need to work in this sector.

    The course will cover key theoretical and practical units including:

    • Leadership & Teamwork in the Public Services
    • Understanding Discipline in the Uniformed Public Services
    • Responding to Emergency Service Incidents
    • Understand the Impact of War, Conflict & Terrorism on the Public Services
    • Crime & its Effect on Society
    • Command & Control
    • Planning & Management of Major Incidents

    Progression:

    Learners will begin on a one year 90 credit diploma, equivalent to 1.5 A-Levels. Successful completion of year one will lead to progression onto the second year where they will study an additional 90 credits to achieve a fully Extended Diploma, equivalent to 3 A-Levels.

    Completion of the Extended Diploma will lead to entry to a range of Higher Education programmes, apprenticeships or employment.

    Entry Requirements

    5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above, to include English and maths or successful completion of a Level 2 qualification at Merit or Distinction level. Candidates must be able to demonstrate enthusiasm for the public services and the development of their own leadership, teamwork, fitness levels and communication skills.
