Sports Studies

Our exciting range of Sports programmes here at BCA are designed to nurture and develop your skills and passion to progress towards your career aspirations. Whether that is as a performance athlete, a coach, a sports therapist, or any number of careers in the sports industry. We have a course that is right for you.

Students have the opportunity to study the science that underpins sports performance such as anatomy and physiology, nutrition and sports psychology and will also develop and improve their practical skills in a range of practicals lessons such as fitness testing and sports coaching.

Alongside our academic sports courses, students also have the opportunity to be part of one of the BCA sports academies. As part of the programme students will receive expert coaching and represent the College in various regional and national competitions.

We currently offer sports academy programmes in Football, Rugby and Netball which enables individuals to develop their sporting talent with expert coaching and represent the college in various regional and national competitions.   • Level 1 Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure

    About the course

    This course is an introductory programme to the sport and leisure industry. The course is designed to provide a broad foundation of skills and knowledge across a range of sport and leisure modules. It will involve a mixture of practical and theory modules and is assessed via a range of methods including projects, practical demonstrations, and assignments based on realistic workplace situations, activities, and demands.

    Progression

    Progression routes include the Level 2 Certificate or Level 2 Diploma in Sport or into the sports industry via employment or a Level 2 Apprenticeship.

    GCSE/Functional Skills

    All full-time students, aged between 16-18, will study GCSE or Functional Skills in Maths and English, if they don’t already hold a grade 4 or above GCSE in the subject. This is an integral part of their vocational study programme at BCA. Students over 19 are also encouraged to refresh and accredit their skills alongside vocational study.

    Entry Requirements

    2 GCSE at grade 2 or above including English. Learners must demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment for their chosen study programme and successfully complete an academic interview.

  • Level 2 Certificate/Diploma in Sport

    About the course

    This qualification is ideal for learners who are interested in pursuing a career in the sport or outdoor education industry. This unique programme will give you the opportunity to tailor your course to your area of interest where you will have the choice of one of three pathways: Sports Coaching, Exercise and Fitness or Outdoor Education. You will study core modules as well as modules specific to your pathway and have the opportunity to gain a specific additional qualification which will enable you to access employment in this area.

    Progression

    Successful completion of this course will lead to opportunities to progress on to Level 3 qualifications in Sport or Outdoor Education, on to an apprenticeship or into employment in the sports industry.

    GCSE/Functional Skills

  • Level 3 90 Credit/ Extended Diploma in Sport: Performance & Excellence

    About the course

    The aim of this programme is to develop individuals knowledge and skills across a range of disciplines which combine to develop an in depth understanding of how optimum sporting performance can be achieved. This is designed for individuals who are keen to develop their own sporting performance or those who want to pursue a career developing elite athletes.

    Learners will begin on a one year 90 credit diploma, equivalent to 1.5 A Levels. Successful completion of year one will lead to progression on to the second year where they will study an additional 90 credits to achieve a fully Extended Diploma, equivalent to 3 A Levels. Students will also have the opportunity to gain further qualifications in leadership, coaching and fitness instructing.

    The course will cover key theoretical units including;

    • Anatomy and Physiology
    • Technical and Tactical Skills
    • Sports Nutrition
    • Analysis of Performance
    • Sports Psychology
    • Sports Coaching

    Progression

    The full two year programme is the equivalent to three A levels, preparing the students to progress on to Higher Education studying a range of subjects at University such as Sports Therapy, Sports Management, Sports Science & Coaching, Sports Teaching and many more.

    In addition this course is perfect preparation for students wishing to go into employment or an apprenticeship in sport and/or the fitness industry.

    *There are also options for learners to study a one‑year 60 credit subsidiary diploma or 90 credit diploma qualification

    Entry Requirements

    5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English and maths, and preferably either science or PE OR Level 2 Diploma in Sport at Merit/Distinction grade (or equivalent) and GCSE English and maths at grade 4 or above.

    All applicants must successfully complete an academic interview.
