Course Overview

A Horticulture or Landscaping Supervisor plays a vital role in managing teams and ensuring horticultural and landscaping projects are completed to the highest standards. Whether it’s maintaining public parks, historic gardens, private estates, or large-scale landscaping projects, supervisors are responsible for quality, safety, and environmental care.
During this apprenticeship, you’ll develop the technical knowledge and practical skills needed to oversee and support landscaping or horticultural teams. You’ll learn how to plan, coordinate, and monitor work, while ensuring it meets client expectations and environmental sustainability goals.

Course information

Throughout the apprenticeship, you will gain knowledge and hands-on experience in:

Leading and supervising horticulture or landscaping teams.

Planning and coordinating site operations.

Identifying and caring for a wide range of plants, trees, and turf.

Managing soil health, pest and disease control, and irrigation systems.

Ensuring compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.

Reading and interpreting site plans and drawings.

Communicating effectively with clients, colleagues, and contractors.

Promoting sustainability and biodiversity within your work.
You’ll also develop professional behaviours such as problem-solving, leadership, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Typical duration to gateway: 30 months

The apprenticeship combines on-the-job training with off-the-job learning delivered through BCA’s expert tutors and assessors.
Learning takes place both in the workplace and through dedicated online or in-person workshops.
You’ll complete a digital portfolio showcasing your progress and achievements.
A dedicated Assessor Trainer will visit you regularly to review progress and support your learning journey.
Our blended learning model ensures flexible, high-quality training tailored to your workplace environment.

Your knowledge, skills, and behaviours will be assessed through:
Workplace observations and evidence of competence.
Progress reviews with your assessor and employer.
A final End Point Assessment (EPA) carried out by an independent assessor, including:
A knowledge test,
A practical observation, and
A professional discussion based on your portfolio.

Upon successful completion, you will be awarded the:
Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard in Horticulture or Landscaping Supervisor
This qualification is recognised across the land-based industries and provides a strong foundation for career
progression.

During this Level 3 apprenticeship, you will gain hands-on experience working on real sites such as gardens,
parks, and estates. You will carry out landscaping tasks, including installing and maintaining hard structures like
paths, walls, decking, and water features, as well as supervising teams, using machinery safely, managing
projects, and following environmental regulations. Approximately 80% of the apprenticeship is spent
working with your employer, giving practical, real-world experience, while the remaining 20% is off-the-job
training for theory and skills development.

Successful apprentices can progress to roles such as:
– Landscape or Horticulture Site Supervisor
– Contracts Manager
– Parks or Estate Manager
– Garden Designer or Project Lead
Further study options include higher-level apprenticeships or specialist technical qualifications.

This is a Level 3 apprenticeship.

You’ll need suitable outdoor clothing and PPE for practical work.
You’ll work in a variety of outdoor environments, often in all weather conditions.
This programme supports strong career growth within a sector that promotes sustainability and environmental
care.
