Course Overview

The aim of this valuable course is to develop your basic skills and knowledge to allow you to progress into a career in the Motor Industry or to a higher level course. This course is Portfolio based only.

The programme comprises modules involving practical work and essential knowledge related to motor vehicle that may include Contact with Customers, Routinely Servicing the Vehicle, Identifying Faulty Components, Replacing and Removing Components/Units and Rectifying Faults. It also includes Preparing New and Used Vehicles, Maintaining Effective Working Relationships and Maintaining Health, Safety and Security of the Working Environment.

Entry Requirements

Two GCSE’s at grade 2 for Maths and English. Enthusiasm for Motor Vehicle Engineering will need to be demonstrated at interview.

Course information

Example units include: Health and safety for motor vehicle studies, Introduction to battery and lighting systems, Introduction to engine liquid cooling and engine lubrication systems, Introduction to engineering equipment and materials, Introduction to spark ignition power units, Introduction to steering and suspension, Introduction to vehicle braking systems, Introduction to vehicle exhaust systems, Introduction to vehicle ignition systems.

Students who complete their main programme with sufficient time will be offered a hybrid and electric vehicle safety training programme within your course. Alongside the above study, the programme will include GCSE maths and English Language.

Those who come to us with passes (Grade 4 and above) in English and/or maths will follow a Professional Development programme alongside their main study programme.

1 Year

The course is delivered through practical and knowledge based teaching. You will attend college 3 days each week.

The course comprises workshop-based activities supported by classroom study and assessment will depend on the study stream the student is matched to, and gaining unit merits along the programme to achieve the various learning aims. This course is Portfolio based only.

1 week – Students will complete 1 week (5 days) Employability
training in college.

Level 2 Motor Vehicle Course

Level 1

You will require PPE for practical lessons, they are: Steel toe capped safety boots. Overalls. Safety glasses. For the knowledge sessions you will need the course workbook – more information about this at enrolment.

You will also require pen, paper and file for your practical and theory lessons. Lockers and workbooks are mandatory for all students and can be purchased via the College.
