Course Overview

Develop your knowledge and cooking skills to cook meals in a healthy, cost effective way and develop the confidence to share these skills with family and friends. Students will obtain a Level 1 BTEC qualification that is nationally recognised by the Catering and Hospitality industry. Suitable for students with experience in hospitality, wishing to work within this industry sector or to develop their home cooking skills.

Suitable for students that are able to work independently, with minimal support and previous cookery experience.

Course information

In the BTEC Level 1 Award in Home Cooking Skills course, students will learn the fundamental skills required to prepare healthy, nutritious home-cooked meals from scratch. The course is highly practical, focusing on building the confidence to cook at home while avoiding pre-prepared or ready-cooked foods. Each week students will learn how to select and prepare ingredients, follow a recipe whilst maintaining food safety and hygiene whilst cooking. They will be encouraged to share their knowledge of cooking and will have the opportunity to cook for other people throughout the year.

34 weeks from September 2026 to June 2027

These topics will be taught using practical work together with classroom based learning.

Students are assessed through an internally marked portfolio of evidence that includes cooking records, photographic proof, witness statements from tutors, and practical demonstrations of cooking skills and hygiene. At the end of the year there is an internal practical assessment where students choose one dish to cook in class.

Level 1 BTEC Qualification in Home Cooking Skills

All of our courses are aimed to support students develop their employability skills and life skills. This course will give you a recognised qualification which could lead to work in the catering or hospitality industry or to access further cooker courses and qualifications.
