SAFEGUARDING AND WELLBEING WEEK HIGHLIGHTS KEY STUDENT SUPPORT TOPICS

News overview

This week we celebrated Safeguarding and Wellbeing Week, providing students with valuable opportunities to learn about personal safety, mental health, and the support available to them both in college and beyond.

Throughout the week, a range of expert organisations visited the college to deliver informative sessions designed to help students make safe and informed choices.

The week began on Tuesday morning with a presentation from Thames Valley Police focused on the topic of consent. The session explored what consent means in different situations, the importance of respecting boundaries, and how students can recognise and respond to situations where consent is not clearly given. Officers also highlighted the importance of communication, respect, and understanding the law around consent.

On Wednesday students heard from YGAM, who delivered an engaging session on gambling and gaming awareness. The talk explored how gaming and gambling can sometimes overlap, the risks associated with online betting and in-game purchases, and how students can recognise the signs of harmful behaviour. Importantly, YGAM also shared information about support services available to anyone who may be struggling with gaming or gambling-related issues.

Thursday focused on mental health and wellbeing, with two important presentations. The ANDY Clinic delivered a session covering mental health, social anxiety, and strategies for managing everyday challenges. Students learned practical ways to cope with anxiety, the importance of talking about mental health, and where to seek help when they need it.

Achieving for Children were also in on Thursday, speaking to students about substance misuse, helping them understand the risks associated with drugs and alcohol. The session encouraged open discussion and provided clear information about how to access support if students are worried about their own behaviour or that of someone they know.

The week concluded on Friday with a session from DASH, who spoke about domestic abuse and healthy relationships. The presentation helped students recognise the signs of abusive behaviour, understand the importance of respect and equality in relationships, and know where to go for help and advice.

Safeguarding and Wellbeing Week forms an important part of BCA’s commitment to supporting students’ safety, wellbeing, and personal development. By working with expert organisations and providing open conversations around these important topics, the college aims to empower students with the knowledge and confidence to look after themselves and others.

We would like to thank all the organisations involved for sharing their expertise and supporting students throughout the week.
